Sassoli is an obscure Socialist from Italy (and Salvini critic) installed as president as a result of a deal between the EPP, Renew Europe (Macron) and the Socialists.

* Our first reaction revolves around the pure immaturity and paranoia of EU leaders. They feel threatened by national flags and members who do not wish to lose their identities in Brussels? Is this some new type of EU Groupthink?

However, this is likely a reaction to Brexit and a sense that Brussels is losing the hearts and minds of many in Europe.

In our opinion, instead of the EU learning its lessons and accepting its limits, the post-Brexit atmosphere in Brussels will likely result in a more aggressive attitude from those Eurocrats who feed off the system. Brussels will be anxious to expand its powers in order to gain more control while attacking the integrity and independence of the nation states.

Italy’s Silvia Sardone (MEP, Lega) claims the first decision that Sassoli took after Brexit was that of removing member states’ flags from the benches.

“I had the Italian flag on my desk, as well as many other MEPs had their own national flags on theirs, it’s always been a normal custom.”

“The fact that he decided to do so straight after his election makes me reflect a lot about the ideas that the EU has for the future. I think Europe is strong provided the individual national identities – including their history, values and traditions – are respected and protected.”

“If they, instead, want to level and cancel out the peculiarities of each state we won’t go forward towards a better Europe.”

** Oppressive regimes which feel their powers slipping away often resort to desperate measures in their last hours.

For Brussels, reality may slowly be setting in, although they will not give up without a fight…Eurocrats are opportunists with too much at stake personally to relinquish their seats of power at the inner circle.
