‘Game Time’: Italy’s Salvini pulls plug on government, calls for elections.
Salvini’s party, the League, has more than doubled its support since the last elections of 2018. The League is polling at an all-time high of 38%.
Meanwhile, one of our favorites Giorgia Meloni, leader of Brothers of Italy, is approaching 7.5%. Meloni is an ally of both Salvini and Viktor Orban and her party is aligned with the PiS (Poland) of the ECR group in the EU Parliament.
This would be a dynamic coalition and would enable Salvini to cut the chains from 5Star and the unelected PM Conte, who have been undermining Salvini. With the Brothers and Meloni, this would also elevate the status of the ECR group in the EU.
– The leader of Italy’s ruling League party, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, declared the governing coalition to be unworkable on Thursday after months of internal bickering and said the only way forward was to hold fresh elections.
The League issued a statement listing a raft of areas in which it had a “different vision” from 5-Star, including infrastructure, taxes, justice and relations with the EU.
* While the League has soared, support for 5Star has fallen sharply, almost by 50% since the last election.
Italians are firmly behind Salvini…he should strike now while at full strength.
