V4 Report: Hungary 🇭🇺: Some interesting comments from Viktor Orban regarding new (and old) allies in the fight against migration and the upcoming election in April. It seems Orban is trying to recruit Croatia 🇭🇷, which is a very smart strategy.

“This will not be a regular election,” Viktor Orbán said. “There is a struggle going on in Europe. At the centre of it is the question of which countries will get to “stay out of the global trend which creates immigrant countries taking in more and more mixed populations, cultures and people without roots”, he said.

“The question is whether Hungary, together with Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia “and perhaps Romania”, will get to “stay out of this and preserve Hungary as a Christian, national, Hungarian country”.

** We are encouraged to hear someone else besides ourselves mention Croatia 🇭🇷 in this struggle. In our opinion, Croatians are a natural fit for Visegrad and would be a vital ally in Central Europe. We may be too optimistic, given the current political environment which has frustrated many Croatians, but we think it’s only a matter of time. Remember that both Poland (2015) and Austria (2017) were ruled by leaders close to Brussels a short-time ago. Italy (2018), pending the creation a new government, appears ready to defect as well.

However, PM Andrej Plenkovic, who has strong ties to Berlin and Brussels, is a major obstacle. While Croatia is doing a nice job securing the border, the government is accepting EU migrant quotas from Greece and Italy. This is somewhat self-defeating. As long as nations continue to accept the quotas, the EU will continue to find new ways to transport them to Europe. The migrant quotas will never end and there will be new schemes introduced on an annual basis.

In addition, Croatia seems to be enlightening many regarding the Istanbul Convention. Hopefully, this is just the beginning. Plenkovic is obviously rattled and seems to be pressuring members of his party from speaking publicly against it. If there were any doubts about Plenkovic’s loyalty to Brussels, it has been exposed with this issue. Even his tactics are straight from the “EU handbook” of intimidation.

*** We would be remiss not to mention Slovakia 🇸🇰 regarding the Istanbul Convention. Although they did not get as much media attention, the Slovakian people protested as well and had a large part in convincing the government to reject it.

We hope more countries, now that the people are becoming more aware of the details, will defy the Council on Europe regarding Istanbul.

**** Yes, the V4 Report ventured outside the main subject of the linked article (as we will do) but we are thinking ahead to a future coalition of CEE states to counterbalance the influence of Berlin, Paris and the West EU bloc.

A strong core of the four Visegrad states, Austria and Croatia is the key and may well give others – such as the Baltics, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovenia – the confidence to defy Brussels regarding migration. We feel many would like to but still feel somewhat intimidated by Brussels.

The nations that comprise the “Three Seas Initiative” zone would serve as a solid foundation to challenge the West on migration. We believe it will be needed to send Brussels a message. While not there yet, this coalition is quietly emerging.

The alternative – to be dominated by the demands of France and Germany – is not an option.
