* Germany: Angela Merkel changes tune on refugee cap? Not exactly. Regardless of Merkel’s claims, Germany is now dependent on Viktor Orban and the V4 to secure their border. How ironic.

In July, Angela Merkel said, “On the issue of an upper limit, my position is clear. I won’t accept one.”

Nearly three months later, her position has changed. “I’m pleased about the compromise we’ve found,” Merkel said, describing the deal with her “sister party” (CSU) as a “very, very good basis” for the two parties to enter coalition talks next week.

Merkel and Horst Seehofer (CSU) have agreed “to try” and limit the number of migrants arriving in Germany each year to 200,000. However, Merkel and Seehofer are quite clever with their misleading language. Seehofer can proclaim to his party that he forced Merkel to accept a refugee limit, while Merkel can still claim that the right to asylum knows no limit. Merkel and Seehofer are dancing again in Germany.

The 200,000 figure only refers to “controlled admissions”, such as migrants relocated to Germany as part of the EU’s direct transfer programs or under the deal struck between the EU and Turkey in 2016. What about the numerous illegal migrants entering Europe via Italy, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria? They certainly are not headed to the Baltic states.

Merkel and Seehofer both said the figure itself is “flexible” and that the fundamental right to seek asylum is guaranteed. In other words, migrants will not be turned away at the German border after the limit is reached.

According to the document, Germany will “try to limit” the number of migrants arriving from outside the framework of these programs by fighting smugglers, protecting the EU’s borders and striking deals with countries of origin. Haven’t we heard this before? We certainly have…..for the last two years.

Merkel and Seehofer know Germany cannot deliver on this pledge. Germany will not turn away any migrants and Seehofer claimed a month ago that it was virtually impossible to deport a migrant once they reached Germany. This was the “reality in Germany” he said.

** Ironically, Germany’s best ally may be the group that Merkel despises, the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) of Hungary, Poland (observer status but participating), Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Croatia and Slovenia. Along with non-EU Macedonia, the CEDC has secured Europe’s Balkan route and is the main force reducing the flow of migrants to Germany. While Merkel called the Balkan effort “not her Europe”, Germany has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the CEDC’s preventive actions.

Merkel should be careful about attacking Viktor Orban and the V4. Today, her country is dependent on them. While Merkel and the EU Ministers stage useless Summits to proclaim their so-called greatness, the leaders of Hungary and Visegrad are taking the necessary actions to protect Europe.

Who is upholding and defending European values?

Onward V4!
