Cyprus asks EU Frontex to stop illegals sailing to the north.
Good luck with that. 🤔
Interior Minister Nicos Norris said, “We want to see the EU hold Turkey accountable for its actions, asking it to fulfill its obligations towards all EU member states, including Cyprus.”
Well, how smart is the strategy to hold Turkey accountable when they still receive EU funds, despite the fact that more than 75 percent of illegal immigration is through the buffer zone? Nouris added that Turkey does not take any measures to prevent the flows.
And Frontex patrols? What good do they really do if it cannot push back the illegals, now that the EU is monitoring its actions?
Again, Turkey is the issue, but should it be? Maybe Cyrus and Greece will call out the EU too. If it’s the “EU borders” then it’s the EU that must take the ultimate responsibility of defending those borders.
Turkey cannot be relied upon in the long term; nor should the EU states rely primarily on any foreign country to stop the migration flows. This is unwise and ripe for abuse.
However, the nation-states may also want to start pondering if it’s wise to rely on the EU itself to defend its borders. All the evidence since 2015 seems to indicate that they really do not want to stop the migration wave.
Solidarity can be good or bad…depending on who is actually defining it.
