Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has also vowed to oppose the EU border-guard plan at the Salzburg summit.

A bit of history: Frontex “rescued” 38,000 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea last year and transferred them to EU ports. They do not return migrants to ports in Africa. This is not something we equate with securing the borders.

Nor would the V4 Report put its faith in Dimitris Avramopoulos and the leaders of Brussels to secure the external borders. From the agenda of the 2017 Malta Summit, Angela Merkel and others seem determined to turn illegal migration into legal migration, and we believe Frontex could be one of their tools to achieve this goal.

According to Euractiv, both Babiš and Pellegrini believe the European Union should steer funds to individual nation states to help them guard their own borders against illegal migration, rather than emphasise funding for Frontex.

“Malta, Italy, Greece, Spain need to be told that they will get more money. They each have their own coast guard, they don’t need any Frontex,” Babiš said in a televised press conference after a joint session with the Slovak government.

Pellegrini agreed: “It is not right to have an Italian coast guard and, parallel to that, to build some small army under the Frontex label,” he said.

The bottom line: The Visegrad states and others do not trust Angela Merkel and an EU agency to actually seal the border and send the migrants back to Africa. In fact, they may even try to undermine Matteo Salvini’s efforts in Italy.

Can one blame them, given the past record of EU Migration Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, who wants to commit the EU to mass migration? Avramopoulos is both an ardent supporter of migration and expanding Frontex, which is quite revealing.

What exactly does Avramopoulos have in mind?
