Macron must be studying some of the tactics on how to control the media from detested regimes of past…and present. Actually, France is quite moderate compared to Angela Merkel’s’ Germany, which, according to Reuters, has demanded downloading of ‘defective content’ in 24 hours, subject to a fine of up to 50 million euros (1.3 billion crowns).
Germany is not exactly a symbol of free speech either.

French regulators will begin their mission in January. Their goal will be to verify if Facebook is doing enough and to see if its practices can be improved.
French regulators will determine this? As pathetic as this is, it also reveals the desperation and weakness of Macron. That he has resorted to begging a private company to engage in censorship is a clear sign that his days are numbered.

Macron described this step as an example of what he calls “smart regulation” (i.e., smart and convenient for Macron), a strategy he wants to use against other technology giants such as Google, Amazon, or Apple.
