One knew it was coming, Brussels is quite predictable: Von der Leyen’s EU Minister (from Sweden) warns Greece that it must uphold the right to asylum.
The V4 Report warned our readers for months regarding Ylva Johansson (Sweden), who was negligently put in charge of migration In the von der Leyen Commission. In fact, our recommendation was to oppose her nomination from the start…but (like the anti-V4 Vera Jourova) she sailed through easily. This reveals much about the sad state of affairs inside the EU.
First it was Hungary, Poland and Italy (under Salvini)…now the EU Commission will attempt to arrogantly interfere with the national security priorities of Greece by pressuring the government to altar its procedures at the borders.
Greece should tell Johansson to return to Sweden to clean-up the mess she helped to create there. She is an absolute disaster, but then again, so is the entire von der Leyen team.
– The Greek government has been warned by the EU executive that it must uphold the right to asylum, as leaders from Brussels travel to Athens for talks on the migrant crisis at Greece’s borders.
Ylva Johansson, EU commissioner for home affairs, said she wanted to discuss a detention centre where illegal migrants were reportedly being expelled from Greece without the chance to speak to a lawyer or claim asylum. (Actually, the migrants entered Greece via a safe country, so they should apply for asylum in Turkey, not Greece.)
Johansson, a leftish Swedish social democrat who took charge of EU migration policy a little more than 100 days ago, said she would raise the issue of the detention centre with Greek government ministers.
The far-left New York Times reported of an alleged “black site” in northeastern Greece, where migrants are held without legal recourse before being expelled to Turkey. Again, immediate push backs are absolutely necessary to properly defend one’s territory from illegal intruders. If not, once the migrants enter EU territory, they are most likely never to be deported.
Greece announced earlier that it was suspending asylum applications for one month. This national security decision must be determined by the elected representatives of Greece, not some unaccountable Eurocrats from Brussels. If this invokes a challenge from Brussels, then so be it…there is little they can do about it.
While the UN agency for refugees has said the Greek decision has no legal basis, the commission has said it needs time to assess the situation.
However, Greece does not have time; it must do what is necessary to defend its territory from an immediate threat.
Johansson said: “We are going to discuss actually what they are doing, but they have to let people apply for asylum.”
She also said the commission did not plan to suspend the right to asylum by invoking a little-known clause of the EU treaty that allows Brussels to propose “provisional measures”, to help a member state facing an emergency because of large numbers of migrant arrivals.
Johansson said the commission would not propose suspending the right to asylum.
Instead, the Swedish commissioner has pledged to revive a long-blocked reform of the EU asylum system. A 2016 attempt to overhaul European asylum law foundered in the wake of fierce opposition from Hungary, Poland and others opposed to mandatory quotas of refugees.
Johansson said she favoured “a mandatory solidarity mechanism” but details of what that meant had still to be finalised.
* The V4 Report read claims last week that somehow the EU was embracing Orban’s position on migration. While Orbán does indeed have the right positions and solutions, it is a big stretch to claim that the EU Commission has suddenly ‘seen the light. We did not buy this claim then…and we certainly do not buy it now.
The agenda of Brussels is not to stop illegal migration, or to actually DEFEND the borders, but to ‘manage’ the flow of migrants in order to commit the EU to mass migration in a safe, orderly and regular way.
Multicult and mass migration is the altar upon which EU leaders worship. This will not change.
