Turkey Threatens to Suspend EU Migrant Deal Due to Lack of Visa-free Travel to EU.

Again?

* This is interesting, considering the recent elections and the new government in Greece, which said it wants to start sending the migrants back to Turkey.

For years, Turkey soaked-up the EU money with little fear that the Tsipras government would actually send back “all irregulars” to Turkey.

This may be changing.

However, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said: “We will not wait at the EU’s door. The readmission agreement and visa-free deal will be put into effect at the same time.” 🤔. Please read his statement again.

With this statement, Turkey seems to be saying that the readmission agreement was never put into place, considering there is no visa-free travel for Turkey (although fake passports and smuggling cartels are everywhere in Turkey and tolerated by authorities).

Quite possibly, Turkey is taking preemptive action to nullify the proposed action of the new government in Greece by claiming the readmission agreement was never in effect.

We would not know if this is true because Turkey was never really tested, since the government of Greece was not sending the migrants back in any significant numbers.

* One can never be sure about Erdogan’s intentions, he is a ‘loose cannon’ (irrational and prone to mad outbursts). However, EU membership is impossible at this point because Austria would veto it.

As far as visa-free travel for Turkey, we do not think this is likely. Considering the chaos of Schengen today, granting visa-free travel for Turkey would be devastating for Schengen and could possibly be the final nail in the coffin.

The tensions are already high with the Turks in Europe. Has one taken a look at Turkey’s demographics? 80 million people and 97.8% of the population identifies as Muslim.

** One of the last things Europe needs is to grant visa-free travel status to Turkey. Regardless, the EU should start focusing on fortifying the external border in Greece and Bulgaria now…instead of relying on the ‘goodwill’ of Erdogan.
