UK: Migrants will be banned from making UK asylum claims at sea under proposed new laws outside of the EU.
Even with Brexit, this could be difficult for the UK, which still remains a Council of Europe member state. European nation states need to break away from this organization and the jurisdiction of its ECHR court…or they can defy them. But it’s a start and this proposal is something to fight for.
A post-Brexit shake-up of asylum rules could ultimately result in intercepted migrant boats being immediately taken back to France. France will probably object but Minister Chris Philp told The Telegraph: “There is no reason to leave a safe country like France to make a dangerous crossing.”
Home Secretary Priti Patel said “intercepting and returning the boats is the only way to make the route ‘unviable’.” Unviable sounds much better than Merkel’s welcoming culture. We wish Brexit much success; hopefully it becomes an inspiration for others
